2nd Annual African Film Festival to show award winning films from South Africa, Kenya and Senegal
Galway's second annual African Film Festival is taking place on Sunday, May 31st, starting at 11am in the Town Hall Theatre - all events are free!
Organised by the Galway One World Centre in conjunction with the Galway Film Society and the Huston School of Film & Digital Media, the Festival will showcase films from all regions of Africa, and include the acclaimed Return to Goree (Youssou N'Dour traces the history of jazz) and From a Whisper (Winner of five African Film Academy Awards, the film deals with the aftermath of the Nairobi Embassy bombings in 1998).
The organisers are delighted to announce an exclusive preview of Jerusalema, a blockbuster action-movie from South Africa which will be introduced in person by the producer,Tendeka Matatu.
This year the festival will also have a session specifically aimed at children (games & stories from around the world as well as a showing of Kirikou and the Wild Beasts, a children's tale from Senegal) and a seminar with June Givanni (curator of African and African diaspora cinema internationally and a patron of the Images of Black Women Film Festival in London).
"Last year's festival was attended by over 1400 people", commented Trisha Buddin, one of the directors of the Film Festival. "Considering that this year's festival coincides with the Volvo Ocean Race we expect that number to increase considerably - while all events are free bookings are essential and should be made well in advance to reserve a place." Bookings can be made at the Town Hall Theatre at 091 569777.
